Backyard & Woods

One of the best parts of the property are the spectacular woods, filled with huge maple, oak, cherry, ash, elm and beech trees. Unfortunately some need to be cleared directly behind the house so that our walk-out basement can be graded down, and to remove potential house-crushing "leaners". Right now it looks like a disaster, but we have the "vision" and know it will be beautiful!

Here is a panorama from approximately where the koi pond will be, looking east to south to west:

Panorama 1

Periodically I intend to take the same three shots while leaning against the telephone pole near the front corner of our property - I think it will be fun to see the progression! Here's the first set, from east to west, taken on May 30th:

Porta Potty

For mostly selfish reasons we have a porta potty on site for the contractors. It was simple to order - I just called Modern Disposal and they delivered it the next day. The cost was much higher than I anticipated but worth it given the alternative!

Day 3: More Excavation

The digging is taking longer than the contractor thought, but progressing nicely. Some of the footers are poured, the forms unloaded, and more dirt removed, but more needs to be done before the walls can be poured.

Day 1: Excavation Begins

Okay.

Deep breaths.

Yesterday the excavation began! It is so exciting to see years of planning come to fruition. Our journey began with the purchase of the property two years ago, and continued with plans to build - first thinking that two houses would be best and then deciding on the single house with the in-law apartment (we are not regretting that decision). We ironed out ideas, and our wants and needs, and then worked for several months with our amazing architect and friend Mike, ultimately ending up with our dream home. After surviving the financing process (owner-built construction loans are not easy to come by) we are rolling!

Day 1: Partial excavation of basement, and the rest of the digging should be wrapped up today.
